La cumbre norte del macizo del Iliniza es rocosa y carece de nieve perpetua. Se trata de una ascensión de poca dificultad que contiene unos pasajes cortos de escalada en roca de 2+, sobre los 4900 m se presencia mucha roca floja. Por la potencial caída de piedra no es mala idea llevar casco de protección. La ascensión al cerro iliniza Norte requiere de 1 día y se presta perfectamente para aclimatarse a la altura. Generalmente se pernocta en el campamento "La Virgen" a 3800 m o en el refugio Nuevos Horizontes a 4600 m.
